If you missed Shoptalk Fall 2026, we send our condolences. Nashville was the perfect venue for the smaller, but equally energetic sister event to Shoptalk Spring. Warm weather, live music, and plenty of cowboy hats made their way across the showroom floor.
Shoptalk’s headline theme, “Retail Unplugged,” covered operations, AI-driven customer experiences, modernizing tech stacks, and how to balance commerce, content, and community.
Underneath the lights and buzz of Music City, the industry conversations felt noticeably more grounded. Attendees were less interested in “look what these shiny new tools can do” and more into “show me where these tools fit into my marketing tech stack, and how they add real value”.
Here’s what stood out.
1. AI is only part of the conversation
Nobody is asking “should we use AI?”, it’s now the industry standard. In fact, our recent Secret lives of marketers report identified that 99% of marketers are using AI, but only 36% say it makes their lives easier.
Retailers and brands are of a similar mindset when it comes to using AI. It serves its key role in content creation and campaign ideas for some, while others are diving much deeper into AI capabilities and ensuring its support for product discovery, audience insights, and customer service experiences. All with the goal of helping teams move faster and more efficiently with smaller headcounts and budgets.
However, there are plenty of nuances when it comes to the way marketers use AI and how they feel about it.
The strongest marketing x AI conversations were about knowing where AI helps and where human creativity and judgement should stay center stage. The overall consensus is that the brands seeing the biggest success with AI are the ones using it to support marketers and not replace them.
Our recommendation: Use AI to support human judgement, not replace it. Your brand voice, customer trust, and creativity need people behind them. AI fatigue is real. The tools are amazing, but real people still want to hear from real people.
2. Marketers believe in keeping marketing human
At the Dotdigital booth, one message kept pulling people in: Marketing made human
Our in-house marketers at the booth had multiple conversations about how well this message landed in a room that seemed to be filled with AI headlines.
Two things can be true at once:
- There is plenty of interest in, desire for, and excitement around AI
- AI fatigue is real
Marketers want technology that helps them create better customer experiences without making every interaction feel like it has been generated by a robot.
And not to toot our own horns here, but that’s exactly why our “personalization station” was such a hit! People left the Dotdigital stand feeling valued and not just another badge scan. We encouraged Shoptalk attendees to hang out and actually create something with their own hands, instead of prompting it in an LLM. They could choose from decorating totes and hats, making key chains, or just relaxing at the bedazzle table.
A physical reminder of how personalization is more than putting a first name in a subject line. It’s about making your customers feel seen as a person, not a segment.
Our recommendation: Absolutely use AI to support your marketing. We are big AI fans and have some of the best in-platform AI agents the industry has to offer. But don’t forget to give people the space to be human, whether they are creating or receiving your marketing outputs.
3. Loyalty is a big deal
Customer loyalty has the potential to make or break a brand. And our Dotdigital Customer trend index that surveys 4000 consumers on behalf of marketers proves that.
At Shoptalk, the loyalty conversation focused on genuine value exchange.
Customers are quietly asking, “Why should I stick around?” And the answer can’t always be a 10% discount.
Brand-level conversations are considering what customers will value in 2027, and the list includes:
- Early access offers
- Useful advice
- Community channels
- Personal recommendations
- Better service
- Rewards that feel worth earning
- Personalized experiences that make customers feel like individuals
Marketers are in a strong position to deliver on all of these, with the right data and the right platform. Customer data can reveal what people buy, browse, click, and care about. Then the real opportunity lies in using those signals thoughtfully and creatively. Give your customers rewards and information that feel meaningful.
Our takeaway: Loyalty campaigns and programs are what keep your customers coming back, so be sure to invest the time and budget that they deserve. Dotdigital loyalty actually lives in the same place as your marketing campaigns, and seamlessly uses all your customer data to deliver results.
4. B2B marketing finally got a place in the spotlight
For the first time, Shoptalk gave B2B commerce its own dedicated track: the B2B Exchange.
B2B commerce is brilliantly complicated. Buyers need more than a nice website and a checkout button. They may need negotiated pricing, account-level permissions, repeat ordering, bulk purchasing, product information they can trust, and a sales rep involved at the exact right moment. It’s complex!
And the one point that came up over and over again: B2B buyers are consumers too. They just happen to be at work.
They expect easy product discovery, useful recommendations, and relevant communication. They don’t stop expecting a good experience just because they’re buying 400 units instead of one. Or because it’s a piece of tech they’ll use in the office instead of at home.
There’s a whole world of tools that help speed up sales and reduce manual work, while still keeping the customer experience personalized.
- AI agents can help marketers build smart journeys
- Dynamic product recommendations and pricing can help buyers discover products and services they’ll love based on their interests
- Automations to celebrate milestones make buyers feel supported throughout their journey
- Ongoing communications and content help to educate and upskill B2B buyers, and keep them coming back for more
Our recommendation: Treat your B2B buyers as people, not businesses. Deliver a great, personalized experience that understands their challenges, meets their needs, and considers their preferences. See how Pacific Packaging keep their B2B customers coming back.
5. Consolidation is about more than saving money
Budgets are tight, and costs are up. Nobody has time to log into six systems to answer basic questions.
Techstack consolidation was the talk of the town at Shoptalk. Brands are looking closely at how to rectify overlapping platforms, disconnected data, and overcomplicated processes.
When customer data lives in multiple places, your customer experience becomes fragmented too. One team might know what a customer browsed. Another knows what they purchased. And a third knows if they contacted support. Meanwhile, the customer is getting an email that suggests they should buy the exact item they returned last week. It’s awkward.
Bringing the data and channels together brings teams closer together and joins up the customer experience.
That’s where a platform like Dotdigital earns its place. Scattered customer signals are turned into connected campaigns across email, SMS, push notifications, and all your marketing and customer experience channels. Your customers don’t live in one channel, so your marketing shouldn’t either.
Our recommendation: Consolidation drives better customer experiences and stronger campaign results. It’s not a matter of budget, but a chance to better deliver for your customers.
So, what’s next?
Shoptalk Fall 2026 made one thing very clear: brands preparing for 2027 are using technology to understand their customers better.
2027 will be the year of connecting data, increasing efficiencies, and reducing unnecessary work. And, most importantly, making every interaction feel personal and human.
Our final takeaway: The best marketing makes your customers feel understood and valued, it’s not just another process, it’s the lasting impression you create.
